Only 30% of Surveyed US Small Business Owners Finished 2025 Above Profit Expectations. The Year Before, 57%.

A survey by Bluevine, run with the polling firm Centiment, asked more than 1,000 US owners and executives how they finished the year. Only 30% said their profitability came in above expectations in 2025. At the end of 2024 it was 57% (). About one in three owners had cut expenses in 2025 to adapt to the economy.

This is a US survey of expectations, not a count of accurate forecasts, and it does not say why the number fell. Costs are the obvious suspect. Our reading, which the survey does not prove, is that owners who check the same few numbers often enough tend to see a bad month while there is still time to act.

Why the numbers stay blurry

Most small businesses are not short on data. They are short on a habit. An invoice is sent and half remembered. A P&L gets a glance quarterly, if that. That is not negligence. It is what happens when the person who should be reading the numbers is also doing the job, running the crew and answering the phone.

The fix is not a finance degree. It is a simple structure: the same handful of numbers, checked the same way, often enough that a bad month shows up while it can still be fixed.

Where a tool helps, and where it does not

A template does not replace an accountant. It turns "I should look at my numbers sometime" into something that gets filled in. The Business Ops Bundle is the simple version: a P&L template, an invoice template, and three AI prompts to keep them filled in.
